“Electra” by Sophocles and “Medea” by Euripides are considered the examples of the best tragedies in the Greek literature. Sophocles has written many works but without doubt, “Electra” is one of his best dramas. Electra is commonly considered to be Sophocles's best character drama thanks to the care of its examination of the morals and reasons of Electra herself. Sophocles's “Electra” that was written around 409 B.C. is grounded on the legend of the House of Atreus. Another well-known Greek poet of that time, Euripides, is famed to have written 92 plays though one of the best works is his play “Medea”.

Many of themes which famous antique writers tries to display still prove captivating centuries later, for they are real human feelings of love and revenge, pain and triumph. The main figures in two tragedies– Electra and Medea – are not identical though they have many features in common which unite them: this is a revenge that fills their hearts when they realize that they can loose their dearest people and love at the same time.

The play “Electra” is concentrated on a young woman, Electra, and her brother, Orestes, as they plan to avenge their father's murder. Their father, King Agamemnon, was killed by his wife, Clytemnestra, and her lover, Aegisthus. Long-suffering Electra continues to mourn the death of her father, even after so many years. Her only friends are sadness and melancholy - and an irresistible thirst for justice and revenge.

There may be a part of truth in Clytemnestra’s words, and Electra understands it. However, after Electra’s wish for justice succumbs to her wish for revenge after years of agonized reflection, she confutes her mother’s excuse of her action and accuses her as an inexorable killer. Electra is overtaken by the wish to avenge her father's death. Here Sophocles masterly depicts all the complexity of familial relations between mother and daughter as well as Euripides reveals us all the contradiction of familial relations of Medea and her children.

Justice has been triumphed. Sophocles concentrates our sympathies on Electra, on her strength when she adheres to her own deep belief, and on the heroism she shows in suffering. Sophocles’s Electra triumphs, making his play both a revenge drama and a trilling study of the psychology of Electra herself. One of the main motive forces in the play “Medea” written by Euripides has much in common with the “Electra” by Sopholces. Revenge done in the name of love unites them. The “Medea” is a story of the jealousy and vengeance of a woman deceived by her husband. Medea, a barbarian witch deceived her family to aid her lover Jason to win the Golden Fleece.
