Book review

Book review

A book review is not the same thing as a book report, which simply summarizes the content of a book. When writing a book review, you not only describe the content of the source but also assess its strengths and weaknesses. Students often feel unqualified to write a book review. However, even if you do not have enough knowledge or experience to present a work from the same level of experience as the author, you are able to write an effective review if you understand what the assignment requires.

In writing a paper you should not just describe what you liked in the article, but you should also write why you liked or disliked it. A good book review explains why the book is interesting as well as your reaction to it. To understand your reaction, you need to read it carefully and critically. If it is well written and presents an original thesis supported by convincing evidence, you should point it out in your review.

A review usually consists of several parts, which are the same for other essay types. A book review starts from the introductions section that presents basic information on the book and its author to the reader. The last paragraph of this part is thesis statement that can be in a form of a question that will be reviewed in the paper. The body part may include several paragraphs, though three paragraphs are essential for this paper. Each paragraph should contain an argument with evidence and examples to support your thoughts and ideas. The last section of the review is a conclusion that summarizes the content of the work in several paragraphs. Besides, this part contains paraphrasing of a thesis statement and the results on how successful the chosen thesis is.

A good book review has to be fair and analytical. It should include your knowledge of the genre that means understanding the art form and how it functions. Without such understanding, the reviewer has no historical or literary standard upon which to base his/her evaluation. A good book review shows some knowledge of the author – his/her nationality, writing period, other works etc., your understanding of the author's purpose, as well as how the component parts of the work contribute to that purpose.

Writing a review may take much time – up to several hours of your precious time for the actual reading of the source that can be boring and uninteresting for you, plus some time for writing an essay. We are here to save you both the time and frustration involved in writing reviews.
